An Unforgettable Day with Olympic Champion Christa Deguchi
St. John Brebeuf had the incredible honor of welcoming Olympic gold medalist Christa Deguchi to our school. The gym was filled with excitement as students, staff, and families gathered to meet one of the world’s best judokas. What we experienced was more than a demonstration of sport it was a lesson in perseverance, resilience, and chasing dreams no matter the obstacles.
When Christa stepped onto the mat, the room fell silent. Every move she made was sharp, controlled, and powerful. She demonstrated throws, grips, and counters that have carried her to the top of the judo world. Watching her in action reminded us that greatness is built through years of discipline and determination.
After her demonstration, Christa shared her story. Born in Nagano, Japan, to a Japanese mother and Canadian father, she began judo at just three years old. She first competed for Japan, but in 2017 she made the bold decision to represent Canada, her father’s country, in pursuit of her Olympic dream. That choice came with risk and sacrifice, but it was a turning point in her journey.
Christa quickly rose to the top. In 2018, she became the first Canadian woman to medal at the World Judo Championships. The following year, she claimed her first world title in the 57 kg division, and in 2023 she added a second. Yet the Olympics remained the ultimate goal.
That dream came true at Paris 2024. Christa became the first Canadian ever to win Olympic gold in judo, triumphing in a tense golden score final against South Korea’s Huh Mi-Mi. Her victory was the result of years of relentless training, missed opportunities, and unwavering belief that she belonged at the very top.
At SJB, Christa spoke openly about her setbacks—missing Tokyo 2020, enduring injuries, and the doubts that come with competing at the highest level. But her message was clear: setbacks are fuel. Every day, every practice, and every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger.
Our students listened closely as she reminded them to dream big, train hard, and never give up. She took time to answer questions, sign autographs, and connect personally with those who look up to her.
Christa’s visit left us inspired. She showed us that greatness is not about medals alone, but about character, resilience, and heart. Her journey proves that with passion and perseverance, we can achieve more than we imagine.
At SJB, we will carry her message forward. Like Christa, we will push past obstacles, support one another, and chase our dreams with determination.
