Inclusive Education
Every person possesses an intrinsic dignity which must always be respected
“The value and dignity of the human person does not arise from the physical or mental qualities, from efficiency, productivity, or speed in one’s actions. It comes rather from the fundamental fact that each individual is created by God and redeemed by the blood of his Son, Jesus Christ; every person possesses an intrinsic dignity which must always be respected.”
Inclusive Education
-
Integration of students with disabilities and diverse abilities into classrooms with other students is prioritized
-
Schools must make reasonable efforts to integrate students before considering alternative placements
-
Focus on creating inclusive learning environments where all students can succeed
Individualized Planning
-
In British Columbia, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is designed for students with disabilities or diverse abilities. According to Ministerial Order M638/95, a student qualifies for an IEP if they have been identified by the school as having disabilities or diverse abilities that require specialized education services.
-
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a customized educational program designed to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities or diverse abilities. According to BC Ministerial Orders, an IEP includes specific learning outcomes, required support services, and adapted materials or instructional methods tailored to the student’s needs. The goal is to ensure equitable access to education and support the student's academic and social development.
-
Parents are encouraged to inquire about the specifics of their child's IEP with their child's school to understand how it will be implemented and monitored.
Collaborative Support

Pre-referral Process:
The pre-referral process has three key phases vital for effective student support. Each phase gathers information, assesses needs, and creates tailored strategies.
-
The teacher conducts systematic observations and evaluations, consulting with parents and the student.
-
Consultation: The teacher consults with school-based learning support personnel.
-
Referral to SBT: The teacher and learning support teacher refer the student to the School-Based Team (SBT) for further assistance, with documentation managed by the Case Manager.
Referral Process:
Referral Process: It includes key steps for a smooth transition for the individual being referred, such as identifying services or specialists, gathering information, and facilitating communication among all parties. Each element is crucial for ensuring the individual receives optimal support and care.

Referral to the SBT if initial strategies are unsuccessful.
The SBT reviews evidence, considers additional interventions, and monitors progress.
If needed, the SBT involves specialists for more intensive interventions.
Parental involvement is crucial at every step to ensure collaborative planning and support for the student's educational program.
