CISVA Statement of Solidarity Following Minneapolis Tragedy
The Catholic Independent Schools of Vancouver Archdiocese (CISVA) joins the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in expressing profound sorrow and solidarity with the Annunciation Parish and School community in St. Paul and Minneapolis, following the recent tragic mass shooting that took place on August 27, 2025. Our hearts are deeply moved by the loss and suffering endured, especially as children, their pastor, and teachers—gathered in joyful anticipation for a new school year and the celebration of the Eucharist—became victims of this senseless act of violence.
Message of Solidarity
On August 28, 2025, the Most Rev. William T. McGrattan, President of the CCCB, sent a letter to Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis, expressing the closeness and support of the Canadian Church to the grieving students, families, teachers, and parishioners of Annunciation Parish and School, as well as the faithful throughout the affected Archdiocese. The loss of two children and the injuries sustained by many others remind us of the profound vulnerability of our school communities and the urgent need for collective prayer and compassion.
Call to Prayer
The faithful throughout Canada are invited to join in prayer for the eternal repose of the children whose lives were lost, the healing and recovery of all who were injured, and the comfort of the entire community as it faces this unimaginable pain. In particular, we commend the courageous efforts of staff, teachers, and clergy, whose leadership and compassion remain steadfast in moments of crisis.
A Message of Hope
In these sorrowful times, CISVA echoes the hope that Christ, who never abandons the suffering, will bring peace, consolation, and strength to the Annunciation Parish and School community and all who mourn. Let us come together, united in faith, to support our brothers and sisters in Minneapolis, trusting that through prayer and solidarity, healing and hope may prevail.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and individuals forever changed by this tragedy. May the loving embrace of God surround all those affected and inspire communities everywhere to work together for safer, more compassionate schools and parishes.
